Lesson 5 - Shall we go and see a movie?

Updated: Aug 31, 2019

This lesson is about inviting a friend to go and see a movie. You will also have to decide a meeting time and place.

I am a big fan of suspense movies, but I rarely get a chance to go to the cinema these days.

First of all, here are some common types of movies:

- Comedy movies / comedies

- Horror movies

- Suspense movies

- War movies

- Crime movies

- Thrillers

- Documentaries

- Action movies

- Science Fiction movies

- Romantic Comedies

To start an invitation, you can ask a friend if they are free on the day that you want to see the movie:

> Are you free this Saturday?

> Do you have any plans this Friday night?

If they tell you that they are free, you can invite them to the movie:

> Shall we go and watch a movie?

> Do you want to come and see a movie? Would you like to come and see a movie?

> Why don't we go and see a movie?

You can ask them what movies are showing at the cinema by asking:

> Do you know what is on?

> Do you know what is showing?

Or you can ask them what movie they want to watch:

> What movie would you like to see?

You can invite them to do something before or after the movie:

> Do you want to get something to eat before the movie? / Do you want to get dinner before the movie?

You can ask them about the meeting time and place:

> Where shall we meet? What time shall we meet?

>Where do you want to meet? What time do you want to meet?

Or you can suggest the meeting time or place:

> How about we meet at Namba parks at seven.

> Why don't we meet at Shinsaibashi station at six thirty.

> Let's meet in front of Marui at eight.

If you want to let the other person decide something, you can say one of these phrases:

> It's up to you / you can choose / I don't mind

Now let's look at a model conversation between two friends who want to watch a movie. Let's call them Steve and Sally:

Steve: Hi Sally, are you free this Saturday?

Sally: Yes, I'm not doing anything. Why?

I have no plans. Why don't we do something?

How about we go and see a movie?

Great idea. Do you know what's on?

No, I'm not sure. Let me check..........Toy Story 4 and Aladdin are both on.

Which one do want to see?

I don't mind. It's up to you.

So, how about Toy story?

Ok. Shall we have dinner before the movie starts?

Sure. What time shall we meet?

How about we meet at Namba station at six o'clock?

Ok. That sounds great. See you then

See you
